OUR CoHO MATTER TO ALL OF Us

WHAT'S GOING ON?

The Coos Basin Coho Partnership is a community partnership dedicating to strengthening our local Coho salmon population, a species vital to our environment, our cultures, and our coastal communities.  Coho salmon are like the heart of our rivers: when they're doing well, it means our water and everything living in it is healthy too. Over the years, changes to their habitat have made it harder for coho to thrive in our waterways, and as a result, populations of this threatened species have dwindled.

Our partnership, backed by an $11 million grant, is centered on strategic restoration action and a 25 year plan to improve Coho conservation in the Coos watershed. Coho Salmon are protected under the endangered species act, but they cannot survive without their watershed. We will enhance and improve our rivers and surrounding areas to make them a better home for our Oregon coast coho salmon to spawn, travel and grow while and in doing so, will improve the overall health of our watershed.

By restoring our rivers, we not only enhance ecological balance but also strengthen our community through cultural and economic opportunities.

WHY DO COHO MATTER?

As a keystone indicator species, the numbers of the protected Coho salmon in the Coos Basin reflect the overall health and vitality of our watershed coastal streams. Essentially, if the Coho are in trouble, we are all in trouble.

Gray square

We come together with the core belief that healthy ecological, economic, and social conditions are needed to ensure a sustainable future for native Coho salmon through highly connected, functional, and productive landscapes.
