The Strategic Action Plan (SAP) outlines long-term strategies to enact over the next 25 years to sustain Coho salmon populations into the future. It was created by a group of partners (who later became the Coos Basin Coho Partnership (CBCP) members), who used ecological ranking criteria to identify where and how to focus Coho restoration efforts in the lower and upper Coos basins.
The California Coast Coho Salmon ESU is a protected population segment under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) due to habitat loss and declining numbers. These fish, along with steelhead, are native to the Central California Coast and Northern California Coasts, where conservation efforts aim to restore their populations.
The Southern Oregon Northern California Coast region also contains vital spawning grounds for these species. In the North Pacific, wild-caught salmon support a major commercial fishery, particularly in Alaska. However, in the United States, some evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) face threats, requiring protection and management.
These significant units (ESUs) help define conservation priorities for specific populations, ensuring long-term survival.
